In a shocking turn of events, Maximilien de Hoop Cartier, the heir to the Cartier luxury goods empire, has been arrested in Miami for allegedly laundering millions of dollars in USDT, a stablecoin issued by Tether.

According to a press release from the US Department of Justice, Cartier was arrested along with five Colombian nationals on suspicion of being members of a money laundering ring. The group allegedly attempted to smuggle over 100 kilograms of cocaine into the US.

The investigation revealed that the suspects laundered their illegal proceeds through a complex network of shell companies and offshore accounts. The funds were allegedly converted into USDT, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, and then transferred to various accounts around the world.

The total amount of money laundered is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars, according to the official document released by the Department of Justice on May 2nd. The arrests took place on February 22nd, but the news has only recently come to light.

As Cartier awaits trial, his co-defendants are being held in Colombian prisons. The exact date of the trial is still unknown.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Cartier controlled several shell companies and falsely claimed to authorities that they were software and technology companies. Through these companies, Cartier allegedly laundered the illegal proceeds, using various currencies including USDT, US dollars, Mexican pesos, and others.

The use of Tether by criminals has raised concerns in the past, and this latest incident has sparked renewed criticism.

The arrest of Cartier and his co-defendants serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with the use of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in illegal activities. As the cryptocurrency landscape continues to evolve, it is essential to remain vigilant and take steps to prevent the misuse of these technologies.
