Steemit vs. Reddit: A Comparative Analysis of Two Influential Social Platforms

Following my post from yesterday where I mentioned that Reddit is now listed as a Top 100 Most Influential companies, I have decided to do a Blog Post to compare the Steemit platform with Reddit

Overview of Steemit

Launch and Purpose: Introduced in 2016 as a blockchain-based social media platform. • Unique Features: Decentralization, Communities, cryptocurrency rewards (Steemit, Steemit Power, Steemit Dollars). • Community: Focus on niche communities with a strong emphasis on content creation and curation. • Monetization: How users earn through upvotes, staking, and engagement.

Overview of Reddit

Launch and Purpose: Founded in 2005, a centralized platform for user-generated content, discussion, and rating. • Unique Features: Subreddits, diverse content, AMA sessions, real-time discussions. • Community: Broad and diverse user base with dedicated sub-communities (subreddits) for virtually every interest. • Monetization: Advertising, premium memberships (Reddit Gold), and recently introduced Community Points.

User Experience

Content Discovery: Steemit’s trending and hot categories vs. Reddit’s upvote/downvote system and subreddit structure.

In my view, locating specific subjects on the Steemit platform remains challenging. While communities do provide a way to categorize blog posts and articles, it can still be difficult to find content grouped under a particular subject. In contrast, Reddit makes it much easier to find specific content thanks to its organization into well-defined subjects and subreddits.

Engagement: Steemit’s focus on quality content and curation vs. Reddit’s diverse and often fast-paced interactions.

I find it very easy to interact with Reddit's community because all the comments are bundled under specific subjects. In contrast, comments on Steemit are categorized under individual blog posts or articles, making it challenging to get an overview of discussions around a specific topic.

User Interface: Comparison of the UI and UX of both platforms.

I believe that the Steemit blockchain offers a much more user-friendly UI and UX, as users can choose which front end they prefer to use for creating their content.

Community and Moderation

Governance: Decentralized nature of Steemit with community voting vs. Reddit’s centralized moderation and admin roles.

In my opinion, the governance on the Steemit blockchain is much more organized and effectively enforced compared to Reddit.

Community Behaviour: Analysis of user behaviour and community culture on both platforms.

In my opinion, the incentive structure on Steemit attracts a broader audience that actively participates in content creation. Many users on Steemit may not engage in content creation on a platform like Reddit. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it shows that many users are drawn to Steemit specifically for the rewards and are looking for ways to earn additional income. While the incentives do encourage more content creation, it doesn't always result in the highest quality content.

I believe Steemit is an excellent introductory and educational platform for introducing the wider community to cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, and decentralization.

Steemit must, by default, have a stricter content moderation culture due to the incentives distributed among many users on the platform. This ensures that the rewards are allocated fairly and that high-quality content is maintained.

Financial and Reward Systems

Steemit: Explanation of Steemit’s cryptocurrency-based reward system and its impact on content quality. • Reddit: Traditional reward systems and the introduction of Community Points.

Many users are drawn to Steemit specifically for the rewards as they are looking for ways to earn additional income. While the incentives do encourage more content creation, it doesn't always result in the highest quality content.

Growth

Steemit: Growth trajectory will still be influenced as the market adoption for blockchain technology and crypto currency are still far from maturity. • Reddit: Is showing steady growth and have achieved mainstream adoption to the extend that it plays role as a trendsetter in social media.

Although Reddit has around 83 million registered users, I sincerely believe that Steemit has the potential to overtake Reddit in the future. However, there is still a long way to go before this can happen. One significant factor that could work in Steemit's favor is the increasing mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency.

As a summary my opinion is that both Reddit and Steemit has a very specific audience and place in the market. I do believe that Steemit has the opportunity for massive growth as the blockchain and crypto currency matures over the years.

Happy Hiving!
